Parents suck at picking out clothing for their kids... FOREVER. I'm 35. Mom gets me a pair of pastel plaid shorts -too short shorts at that... "I thought you'd like these."
Give her a flow chart, if she deviates from that, then you can get annoyed.

Basically if you wouldn't see it at army-navy surplus or REI, forget it. And NO PASTELS.
