The first time Steve and Danny had sex was very nearly the last. The sex itself wasn't the problem -- that was amazing, leaving them both blissfully limp and exhausted. After they got cleaned up, Steve collapsed on what he thought of as "his" side of the bed. When Danny shifted closer and threw an arm over him, Steve's muscles automatically tensed at the unexpected contact. Danny's face closed down immediately, and he rolled away. "What's the matter, McGarrett, I'm good enough to fuck but not to cuddle?" he said harshly, starting to get out of the bed.
"Wha.... NO!" Steve grabbed his partner's wrist before the shorter man moved out of reach. His heart ached at the idea that someone might have said that to Danny. It hurt even more that his friend might think Steve felt that way. "I'm sorry, Danny. I’m just not used to snuggling."
Danny stayed facing away from him. "It's not that different with men and women, Steven," he said woodenly.
"That's not what I meant." Steve sat up so that he could look Danny in the eye, keeping his hand on the other man. "I'm not used to snuggling with anyone, male or female." Danny looked confused, but at least he seemed willing to listen. Steve took a deep breath. "When I went into the military, my mind was on being the best in the Navy, then in the SEALs. The times I've had to share a bed with someone on an op or in the field, it definitely hasn't been a cuddling situation. Even without don't-ask-don't-tell issues, the military doesn't exactly encourage relationships within the ranks, and focusing on a military career doesn't give you a lot of time for socializing. I'm no virgin, not by a long shot, but the sex I've had in the past had a lot more to do with fucking and screwing than with, well, making love." Steve could feel himself flush and forced his eyes to stay locked on his partner. His free hand touched Danny's face, trying to show his friend which he considered the sex they had just shared. He didn’t think he could say those words to his partner, not yet, but he could try to show him. "All of that, it doesn’t leave a lot of room for poetry or romance...."
"Or cuddling," Danny finished for him. The shorter man sighed and looked down at the bed. "I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions. It's just, this is a big thing for me. I've slept with people who were only interested in sex, and I can't do that. I really need to touch and be touched, especially with someone I care about, someone like you." Danny waved the hand that Steve wasn't still holding through the air as he talked. "I don't have to be public about it -- I know that could cause major problems for both of us -- but I do need it in private. It's been harder than I expected, being away from my family, not being able to touch or hold anyone." When Danny finished, he started to reach for his partner, then let the hand fall to his lap instead.
"Hey, I didn't mean I don't want to touch you!" Steve released Danny's wrist to take both of the other man’s hands in his. "And I like it when you touch me. I just tensed up because I was startled. It's not what I'm used to, so I wasn't expecting it." The SEAL drew his partner forward into a gentle kiss. "You could teach me," he said shyly.
Danny laughed a little with relief. "Teach you how to cuddle? Yeah, I think I could do that." He leaned back on the bed, drawing the taller man down with him. "Let's start with the basics...."
