a (likely stupid) web design question

How do I get my page to work without the .html in the URL?

http://www.melissakuhnell.com/portfolio.html

Assuming that it is an html file, only the default file in a directory will show up without the .html ending (and you'd still need the ending slash in that case), normally that's index.html. There is a way to change that it the server configuration, but probably easier for you would be to just make a new directory - you could get a URL of http://www.melissakuhnell.com/portfolio/ to work by making a sub-directory named portfolio and moving your current portfolio.html file there and renaming it index.html
