Notes: This was meant to be a fic, but it turned out a bit like an analysis really.

Lord Beckett's greatest sin was his knowledge and acceptance of the fact that he was a sinner. Each day he sinned, for sinning was all he had been taught, sinning was all he knew. He learnt greed and pride from his father, sloth and gluttony from his mother, envy and lust from the pirate that had so much less than he did, but so much more than he did. Wrath he learnt all on his own.

His father stood tall and lean, his sharp grey eyes filled with greed. Greed for wealth, which he spent every waking hour amassing. Greed for power, which he spent every sleepless night plotting for. Greed for status, something he was bred into, something he lived, something he passed onto his only son. Cutler was taught not to be proud of what he did, but to take pride in who he was. Cutler was never praised for his intellect and wit, but for his manners and the clothes he was given, the title he wore, the breeding he was born to. Cutler Beckett was greedy because wealth, power and status were the lifeblood of his father, and were handed to him so very carefully, weighing him down so heavily he could hardly breathe the air of his own life. From a young age Cutler had been sculptured by his father, for the sole purpose of the transfer and continuation of his greed, and to feel the pride of holding these very important assets.

Tight within his grasp, Cutler was not sure of what to do with these gifts, these heavy burdens wrapped up in silk, china, mahogany and brocade. His mother had never wielded the assets his father had granted her effectively at all, and yet he himself had inherited her wasteful nature. While his father had been tall and sharp, his mother was short and rotund, a plump but not quite pleasant woman that indulged in all that could be indulged in. She ate only the finest of foods, and as Cutler had only been exposed to such, he found his delicate stomach unable to hold anything less. A fragile creature, his mother's soft, pale hands had never touched a useful tool, never been raised to assist. His mother did so very little, and while Cutler kept himself reasonably busy, many tasks were declared beneath him, and instead performed by servants while he lazed about on his own.

Despite his overbearing wealth and power, Cutler was not above feeling envy. Captain Jack Sparrow had a marvellous ship, a marvellous crew and a marvellous form. Cutler did not like that Jack had such things, and it was for envy that he sought to take them away, so that he may delight in the pain of the other. Interest had turned to lust, but Jack was one to cause jealousy, and so lust had turned to bitter resentment. Acting upon his envy was so much easier when resentment was involved, and by the end of the whole ordeal, his resentment had turned to anger, his anger to wrath, and his wrath to revenge on a disproportionate scale. Motivated by an upbringing based upon greed and pride, both of which were injured so severely by Jack, and an inferno born from hurt feelings turned to hatred and an insatiable need to act upon his wrath, Cutler Beckett plotted for the other's demise so that he may soothe his wounds, wounds that he himself tore wide and salted.
