Warnings: Implied slash

Cutler Beckett was known to be a quiet man, preferring to sit and listen in relative silence rather than enter into lengthy conversations. One could learn so much about others by simply allowing themselves to fade into the background, becoming almost unnoticeable. There was little that Beckett enjoyed more than hearing a dirty little secret spill from the lips of another, and watch the realisation of the slip dawn in the other's eyes as they glanced nervously at him. He could practically hear their thoughts, always something along the lines of, ''Oh my, did I really say that in front of Lord Beckett? Perhaps he didn't notice.'

But Lord Beckett did notice, he always noticed, and the little tug of a smile on his lips and the mischevious glint in his eyes made this very clear. Yes, there were definite advantages to being quiet and unobstrusive. Beckett's lips were always sealed; he was never one to let slip information he would rather keep to himself. Knowledge was power, and Beckett was not fond of sharing either. So just how one of the Lord's naughtiest secrets came to be common knowledge aboard the Endeavour was mysteriously unknown. Perhaps it was their mannerisms, their shared glances, a touch lingering too long... although none of these had been noticed before, so why now?

Commodore Norrington paused in his tasks and turned to watch Lord Beckett, who was gently leaning against the railings before him, standing just a little too close to Lieutenant Groves. When Beckett caught the Commodore watching him, he narrowed his eyes slightly, just daring him to... Norrington knew he shouldn't, but he couldn't help himself. His glance shifted to Groves briefly before returning to the Lord, and he grinned unabashedly. Beckett's lips twitched into a snarl, and he sent Norrington a rather frightening glare before turning away. It only took a questioning glance from Groves to calm the Lord, and a gentle nudge to the shoulder had him smiling contentedly. Norrington returned to his tasks and kept on grinning.
