You have to think differently about the values so you're more conscious of what you're doing, but I don't think it's too tricky. I want to try colored pencils on black paper next and see how that works. I'm hoping it'd give the same vibrant effect but with more control and detail.

Another fun thing to try is colored paper.

The only trouble I found after putting on such thick layers of pastel was when you try to blend with another color, it takes more color off the paper than blending the two together and makes the black paper show through, if that makes sense.
