Oh man. Surely you know there is no 'one discussion' on tumblr XD. It's spread across something like a million blogs and the only way someone can keep fully abreast of it is to watch it go down in real time, popping up on the dash. *more grumbling at the fractured nature of tumblr interaction again*

And that was actually an afterthought I had! All the other tumblr celebrity favourites (Tom Hardy, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch are the first three that come to mind), are very talented, very shy, and very British. They all have either that British reserve or that British self-deprecation thing going on. The only thing JGL has in common with all that is talent. He sticks out like a sore thumb, and I suspect some people would be inclined to think more favourably of him if he weren't so... unrestrained (more... Arthur-like ;D).

I really am bothered by the idea that because Joe is an actor, he therefore invites any and all kinds of attention and can't complain. Which is, in this "JGL owes his fans!" viewpoint, seems to be part of the argument.

Mmm, yes. 'You can't ask for only specific types of attention - it has to be all or nothing' seems to be implication.

And HA! One of the comments I was coming to make was to point out that all three of the fan favorites you named are British and that there is very likely a cultural difference as well. I will say this, Americans, IMO, have a very strange relationship with confidence. I say this because I am an American and it is perhaps true of other places as well but honestly but I don't feel I could comment on another country. I haven't truly lived anywhere else.

In my experience, and part of this comes from having been a teacher for five years, American parents spend a great deal of time attempting to instill confidence in their children. We tell them that they can be anything, do anything, create anything. We spend class time telling them to find their dreams. To love who they are. To believe in themselves and to never apologize for who they are. We tell them to go after what they want because if you want enough you can accomplish it. Mostly, I think that this a good thing, however I have observed that when someone actually does this, when ( ... )

*stares at your post* That is fantastically worded. Tell me who you are so I may follow you around for the rest of my days.

"I do not personally know anyone who doesn't have some degree of separation between persona and person. People don't like to admit it because they feel they are being accused of being inauthentic..."

Damn it, why couldn't I have come up with something that succinct in replying to point #4 in my follow-up post? That is exactly was what I was trying to get at in my reply, lol. JGL on stage, using that showman persona, probably does seem 'fake' (or disingenuous about his fame, as the poster was alluding to). But... well. He's an actor, and he's managed to use his fame in a way that ensures he gets attention on his terms. It's very cynical, sure, and less endearing than a shy and retiring actor, but I can't fault him for it.

"however I have observed that when someone actually does this, when they look in the mirror and say, 'yeah, I am really good at this' we resent them for it and we immediately want them to ( ... )

Tell me who you are so I may follow you around for the rest of my days.My first response was to say "nobody" but that sounds far more self deprecating that I mean it. I have neither a tumbler nor an LJ so I am no one you would know. Though, now that I am slightly out of lurk mode, I will cop to being the anon who asked for your thoughts on caregiver Arthur as well as the one who worried about your sleep patterns. I knew you were in Australia but as someone who has had many bouts of insomnia over the years I wince in sympathy whenever I see it in someone else ( ... )

I thought your meta/brain-spew was right on target! Yeah, I also see a lot of that entitlement from fans in terms of "celebrity X owes it to their fans to do X,Y, and Z." And god forbid a celebrity indicate that they don't want all the extra attention, then they're being "ungrateful." *eyeroll ( ... )
