The Beginning is a very delicate time... whoops that's Dune. Anyway, I'm finally doing one of these things. I have fought it for quite some time. How do I use an lj-cut? What are the other LiveJournal specific tags? tells you how to make 'shortcuts' for long posts or large-image posts so you don't bandwidth-bomb your Friends. Verrry useful.
ljwin32_sema is a LiveJournal client which, to me at least, provides the most flexibility for making and editing entries. You can use the web interface from anywhere, of course, but it doesn't let you preview.
howto and lj_nifty both list helpful hints on how to customise your LJ and other fun things to do with it. Also check out the entries on the LJ site map, as they've got stuff tucked away there that doesn't show up in the left-margin menu.
If you go to your FriendsFriends list, you'll get all the Friends of people you have Friended displaying. Can be really interesting.
That's how I found martinhesselius. mergryphon is on his Friends list; he's a RPGer and SCAdian, although the RPG seems to be the priority right now. He also posts/reposts some really interesting political links at regular intervals, and seems to have Friended half the Virtual World ( ... )
