I started this posting the other day but forgot to save it... Wasn't going to worry about it but discovered it still annoyed me so that I'm going to re do the post and put it up
( Read more... )
When I was in college I had the nerve to show fanfic to my entire creative writing class. Yes, a class that I was paying money for, and was full of people who wanted to write Great Literature...
Fortunately, the teacher was open to the idea, or I would have been shredded.
Funny thing, by the time they got done with the semester, they all wanted to know how *my* story was going to turn out in the end, and hardly anyone asked about the "original" stuff we'd been plowing through.
That's one of the benefits of being able to really get the characters. People will often have a vested interest already in the characters, unlike original stuff, where you have to get them to care about these people.
It always amazes me what people will find to hate... if they can't dig up a real reason to put someone else down, they will find something that doesn't matter one iota and squash them for it.
Though this post sort of does put into perspective the folks in fanfiction that get snobby about one type of it or the other ;). If they don't like people in the RW being arrogant about fanfic, why do some of them treat people who write genres they don't like the same way?
((((Body tackles Raiah for another squeeze because she didn't get to do so the last time they met.))))
Well I guess everyone is a snob in some way, but I just don't think people need to be so frigging rude about it! This was a place to encourage, not put down.
You and I have talked about the dreck out there, and sometimes I find I miss the old system where you really had an editor. Naturally there was still dreck, but...
I guess until I write something original that someone steals and writes something twisted on, I won't understand that mentality, and I won't EVER understand the mentality that says no writing is better than fan writing.
((HUGS BACK)) and YEA Sam comes home on Friday!!! WHEEEEEEE!

Fanfic is a perfect way for people to start out who don't have characters sprouting from their foreheads as Athena did from Zeus's.
