i don't know what to think about this

i hope they are doing other things to address the problem. what about teaching men to live up to a certain standard of decency and respect... or giving every woman a sharp toothed nut-cracker and permission to use it freely. i just think that separating men and women, as much as it appeals to me on that lesbian separatist level, is not going to ( Read more... )

Instead of seperating men and women, how about they add a couple extra security guards on the buses. I don't know, but I do know that I agree with you. Where do we draw the line? Why are gropers getting away with this shit? I've never been groped on a bus or subway, but I assure you if I did you would've heard about it on the six o clock news right after I would have smashed the guy's head through the window.

However, I just had a thought. I remember Felisha from highschool telling me a story about her getting gropped on the subway one morning on her way to school. She apparently screamed at the guy and no one on the fucking subway did anything to help her. I couldn't believe it.

you know silly girl, i think we are really lucky to have gone to our high school. i think we learned not to be passive. your first reaction is to smash the guy's head through a window... mine would be very similar... but i think we are a minority in female-dom.

i think if they had that alarm system we have on the TTC, an advertising campaign encouraging women to use it if they are getting harassed, and a stiff penalty/fine for the gropers.

as for felisha, i think k told me about this educational performance art thing where ppl acted out harassment/abuse on the subway and no one did anything. after the skit they would educate the subway riders about what they could do in such situations. it amazes me how people can ignore this sort of stuff.

Two words: PEPPER SPRAY

It's like when kids are little, they learn not to touch a hot stove by getting burned once... Brazilian men on buses just need to get sprayed..

stun guns... you target the individual whereas pepper spray hurts everyone (especially in a closed environment).

but, i would say that at least the ladybuses are a mesure of safety that can happen right away whereas i think addressing systemic sexism/misogyny takes quite a bit of time (although i can't be 100% sure, i feel like it's at least not easy). when the physical saftey of women is at stake, it would be good to have a way for women to get from point a to b in a safe way, and this seems to be a pretty logical way of doing that.

but i do like the pepperspray idea...i wonder how you'd introduce that as legislation?

i'm just worried they will adopt this safety measure and stop there.

yeah, i heard about that. its definitely a band aid solution, and one that should be accompanyied by strict laws regarding sexual harrassment with a swift punishment system. but what does a crazy feminist like me know? alas...
it's like every time there is a rapist loose, they tell all the women to stay in at night to avoid getting raped. Why don't they tell the men to stay in instead since they're the ones committing the crime? I'd rather avoid getting raped by having all the men on a strict curfew instead when some asshole predator is on the loose.
