I'm surprised they charge you for a first visit. That's not something we ever do (but then again, we're not interior architects). Can't you just look at their websites and look at other projects they've done? That doesn't help you with the prices though, but I suppose most interior architects will charge similar prices.
I rarely have been charged before for a first visit concerning quotation for works, but it has happened maybe once. I can understand time is money and all that, so why not, but it will not help comparing the projects.
I've looked into their website and saw things I like. But I don't want luxurious things (like what is on display on the websites), so it is hard to get an idea. Since I have very small rooms, I need to see what can be arranged (breaking open a wall and which one, switching bathroom and kitchen or not, and paints + furnitures).
If I like several projects I'll take the cheapest, but how can I compare different projects if I have to pay 200€? In the end I think the one who makes the visit is the one who gets the job (except if the client doesn't at all agree with the architect).
