While I like seeing the awesome resolution and details, it's hard to view large pics in the LJ window.
How are you hosting all of those photos? Right before I read your post, I fed some Flickr feeds to my LJ friends page, which posts nice sized versions of the photos (take a look at my friends page if you want to see the result). It works out pretty well. I've also got some Flickr feeds (such as photos tagged Flowers or Clouds) going to the photos part of my Google desktop sidebar. Facebook is a surprisingly good place to share photos (for free) but of course requires the people you know to join.
The pictures account is the "Plus" (ie, "ad-sponsored") LJ account. It comes with a gig of free hosting space. Unlike Photobucket, I'm able to post the sizes and resolutions I want without them being arbitrarily altered.
I'll keep in mind what you said about the photo size; I may either put in smaller pics, or large thumbnails with links to the larger ones.
