I heard on the radio today a lady who said that's where the feminist movement of the 60's really failed us. Maybe it's time to pick that ball back up and run with it.
That's too bad that the media got into its anorexia phase. I do think it's coming out of that, however, and you're starting to see these headlines which show lindsey lohan looking skinny, and this is advertised as a terrible thing. I think girls like Scarlett johannson, or however you spell it, will be slightly turning that image to a more comfortable range for women.
I hope it is, what I've read though suggests that models are getting skinnier and skinnier. There are a few Scarlett Johannsons out there though, but even she's on the thin side compared to a lot of normal, healthy women. and it's not just the skinney that does it. we're also still in the thralls of plastic surgury mania.
yeah, I think people make that assumption because every skinney model out there does, indeed, starve themselves... So they assume that the rest of the population that is less-than-average-wieght must starve themselves too. There's this widespread ignorance that people have different bodies that will do different things- it seems obvious enough.
At the same time, america is so fat from such sedintary lifestyles, i have to wonder what the realistic weight of a human being should be. Certainly america's median of weight is larger than most, if not the top.
the weight of the models is completely unhealthy, though and I'm not sure how we'd rank up in post-industrial nations either... I think part of our weight problem has to do with our fast food and now it's the avaliable most to those educated the least, on the whole. Ramen noodles and hamburger helper are the cheapest (especially if you factor in time), you know, and organic veggies rank further towards the top. I'm not saying that the change still shouldn't take place, it's just something to think about. There was a study a while back though where they attempted to find the ideal size for the most healthy/active man and woman, and neither would be considered thin.
