Toasties : A Very Dutch Thing

As the English are to tea, so are the Dutch to toasties. Toasties are a staple on café menus (though ham 'n' cheese is about as exciting as it gets) and most households have their own well-used toasted sandwich maker. You did know that you can get toasted sandwich makers in the UK, too?

I never realised this was a Dutch thing. There have been toasties in my life ever since my mother bought a toastie maker in about 1990ish... I think it was a fairly new and exciting thing in UK then though. By the time I reached univerity in the late 90s, it was common for colleges to have student-run toastie bars.

My proper machine had to be thrown away due mould in the cupboard, so at present I make do with using a george foreman grill. It doesn't seal the edges, but otherwise it's basically the same thing...

I don't actually know how long it's been a thing in the Netherlands.

But toastie BARS? That's excellent.

The student bar Oele was known for its Friday night toasties, but a bar entirely devoted to toasties…
