configured up the httpd on cesium.clock.org (a.k.a. www.clock.org) and started it. It's been down since last October, when I upgraded cesium from an ancient Sun SPARCstation 20 to a Sun Fire V120. I got the two most critical functions (DNS and E-mail) working right away, and left everything else to ... later.

Much later, as it turns out.

I know what you mean. It's not fun any more. It's become a chore.

People thought I was crazy 5-6 years ago when I started moving all my web sites, DNS domains, email, etc. to hosted services.

I guess I was just lazy ahead of my time.

Some time this year I hope to move whatexit.org's email (my main email) to a hosted solution and then my BSD box will be basically a machine I use for IRC and to do "traceroute" from an unfettered connection.

While I might be willing for someone else to host my web bits (those are public, after all), I will never relinquish control of my domains or my E-mail.

It becomes less fun and more of a chore the more nonstandard a system or configuration requirements you have. FreeBSD or Ubuntu on x86_64/AMD64 would be pretty tolerable.

I'd been putting off upgrading a couple of my boxen for a while (urm, 3 years?). I was finally forced to get off my ass when software updates were cut off for the distro I was on. It was only the fear of having some 12-year-old in Korea own my box due to my laziness that got me off my duff.

It's amazing how much stuff you forget once it's not in daily use any longer. Nice thing though: getting back up to speed was pretty easy.
