Why does my computer have a heartbeat?

I have to say, this is a weird occurrence, one that I have not seen before. I guess I haven't paid that much attention, but I know that this is something that I have examined on my work computer before. When I watch the performance grid on Task Manager, and with no other programs running the CPU usage fluctuates from 2% to 4% then to 64% every 3 ( Read more... )

heh.. cron jobs are your friends. :)

I rather like the HP's approcah to this. On the front of the computers there is an LED with a little heart above it and it blinks in a pulse pattern (on the newer ones, it is a heart icon on the LCD display that goes from empty to solid). I suppose it's meant to be an indicator of a processor halt, 'cause in particularly bad crashes that little light/icon doesn't 'pulse' anymore. Those computers literally do have a heartbeat.

Thanks for the info on the digital camera, I'll ask Artistic_Chaos about hers. I have wanted to get into digital media for sometime now, but have found many excuses that are not valid.
