I think Hotch has always been focussed and driven - and maybe Haley liked that about him? He doesn't shirk a responsibility - and maybe we can blame Gideon a bit here - with him MIA, Hotch has no choice but to step in.
I agree that she chose the wrong time to give him ultimatums. She knew he would go and doing it then allows her to say "well I gave him a choice and he chose the job" - she knew he wouldn't do otherwise.
I can appreciate Haley putting her domestic life first, but something about the line "We deserve a good life" really grated on me. What is a "good life" - one where a partner gives up an important part of their being in order to satisfy a fantasy of the other one? And does she really want a pissed off Hotch under her feet all the time?
I think I agree with you re: Hotchners more than any other person who has written on the subject.
They love each other. I don't think Haley has been passive-aggressive in the past, not really, and while I disliked her in this episode, I wasn't without understanding. Because the thing is, I don't think Haley has ever really understood her husband. I don't think it's her fault; I think Hotch has probably gone to great lengths to ensure that she doesn't. But I think that she thought she understood him for a long time. And in this episode, she started to realize that she just didn't, and I think that was the last straw.
Because no. A happy life isn't enough for Hotch. I don't know why -- although I think everyone in the fandom has their guesses -- but it isn't. He can't give it up.
