So we all know that Hotch wears two guns, right? And it's duly emphasized on several occasions on the show, right? And it's mentioned in many fics, too? So why is it that we never get a viable explanation, canon or fanon, as to why, exactly, he does ( Read more... )

He'd already put his ankle holster/piece on (In Birth and Death) or it's like his backstory--they forget sometimes. *G* (We didn't see him put his underwear on either but assume he's wearing it...)

I don't think it's uncommon for law enforcement agents to wear a back up gun. Hotch IS a marksman (trophies in his office) so it's even more likely that he'd wear one. If you lose your primary weapon (Natural Born Killer) hopefully you can get to your back up before someone starts choking you (NBK)...or you can lend to your team mate who's resigned. *g* Carrying a second piece is pretty self-explanatory, at least to me and I don't think it's very revealing personality wise since a lot of LEOs do it.

Actually i think Hotch might hold his other gun closer to him at all time. Or maybe he took it out and put it on before we get to see it on screen. I hope it's something that they didn't forget about. And i think it's pretty self explanatory too. It's a net quirk of his. But him being such a good shooter (and always seeming to rely on his gun(s)) might have to do with his backstory.

But the scene with Morgan taking out his gun made me think of Gideon's reply to Hotch in Revelations "You lead by example".

Hey, got here from BAU Inbox.

I always figured it was the norm for the main FBI gun bloke in a show to have two (or more) guns on him. Booth in Bones carries at least 2 (and I think it's 3, with one in the small of his back) and I always imagined Tony DiNozzo from NCIS to have an ankle one (though it's never even alluded to)

Morgan has his bat belt and Hotch has 2 guns, it just seems proper!

Of course it helped the story line in LDSK too. Maybe that's the reason they started it, what with the easter eggs they love.

There are two possible explanations:
A) He gave his secondary piece to Morgan and has yet to replace it.
B) The director thought Hotch stopping, lifting his leg to rest his foot on the mattress, attaching an ankle holster, putting his foot down and then carrying off on a tear would have been an awkward shot that would have distracted from Haley's grand entrance. ;)

I always thought it had something to do with his SWAT background. I mean, it's a pretty big step from SWAT, which means wearing armor and carrying a rifle and probably some backup guns, to profiling, which means wearing Kevlar now and again, and not being required to carry a gun..

I think it's mostly over-preparedness or paranoia stamming from his SWAT-background.
