It’s not for everyone, but with my arthritic knees and bunion-y feet it’s easier than walking, or driving and then walking after I finally find a parking spot. That goes double in the winter, when sidewalks are icy and ploughs clear the streets by piling snow onto the sidewalks.
There are risks, but so far my most serious injuries have been from falling off a horse (horses are far more dangerous, when you compare the hours spent in each kind of saddle) and tripping over a speed bump while walking down the street. It’s actually getting safer as drivers become more aware since the number of cyclists is rising, and we are getting more and more somewhat-safer infrastructure to keep us separate from the cars.
I used to love riding my bike as a kid, but now it's tough and there are so many laws and rules here. They've just started putting in bike lanes, but they are few and far between.
