Online & Journaling Habits

Before I get into my real update, I thought I should mention a few things. First, I know that I’m not online very much … what, twice so far? I eventually aim to be online more. I was invited to a chat and well, it turns out that a lot of people don’t like me. Not that it was a surprise, but never a pleasant thing to be told to your face in ( Read more... )

Second, I’m aiming not to have to what I once saw referred to “cheese sandwich journals.” Basically, journals that say “Today I had a cheese sandwich.”

Yes, but sometimes a cheese sandwich is more than just a cheese sandwich. Is it simply cheese on its own, or does it have a slice of lettuce, a sliver of tomato? Is the sandwich maker an adventurous soul who likes to experiment with adding different flavors, such as french mustard, horseradish or tahini? Does our intrepid gastronaut prefer some exotic foreign bread or will a plain white loaf do? Is he vegetarian or a meat-eater?

You can tell many things about a man by the make of his sandwich. I'm always looking for sandwich making tips myself, so I often read these entries with interest.

Of course, if you discuss why you wanted a sandwich, and what it is about all the ingredients that you put on your sandwich, is it still just an entry about cheese sandwiches? I would say that it isn’t. If you discuss not just the sandwich you had today, but relate it to all the other sandwiches you’ve had (or your favorite sandwiches, or your most recent sandwich, or just sandwiches that you’ve heard about), and you look at how this sandwich has impacted your life, then yes, it is more than just a cheese sandwich.

Not that there is anything wrong with just noting your cheese sandwich, but perhaps if you routinely don’t think too much about your cheese sandwiches, there is something deeper that makes you want to avoid thinking about your sandwich…

Perhaps the cheese sandwich unexamined is not worth eating…

I agree. You must face the sandwich. You must bite into its black heart and conquer and consume your fear.

I do wonder if the fact that cheese supposedly gives you nightmares has some connection to this.

You are a very wise man, Mr. Freud.
