My 10-year reunion is coming up in November, and several of my former classmates have emailed me to ask if I’m going. For a brief, lunatic moment I was actually considering it.
And then I got this email the other day...
SO HAVE YOU DECIDED ANYTHING ABOUT THE REUNION YET WORD ON THE STREET ------JOSH S. IS MARRIED AND LIVES IN COLUMBUS HE WORKS AT THE HONDA PLAN WORKING IN THE PLASTICS DEPARTMENT JUSTIN S. IS MARRIED TO THE DAUGHTER OF A CARDIO DOC IN IOWA AND PLANS O WORK IN THEIR CARDIO PRACTICE BUT WHO KNOWS HOW FAR FROM THE TRUTH THAT IS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT LUCASVILLE THE LAST THING I HEARD ABOUT YOU WAS THAT YOU WERE NOT GOING TO SCHOOL AND YOU WORKED AS THE MANAGER OF A PAPA JOHNS PIZZA JOINT IN COLUMBUS LOL -------I DID SEE JASON S. AT DYLAN'S SOCCER GAME TUESDAY HE LOOKS THE SAME BUT HE SEEMS TO HAVE GROWN UO A LITTLE HE WORKS AT THE PRISON IS MARRIED TO MELISSA L. AND THEY HAVE A LITTLE GIRL NAMED ABBY SHE LOOKS JUST LIKE JASON -------COURTNEY G. EMAILED ME HE OTHER DAY SHE HAS TWO CHILDREN TAYLOR AND MOLLY SHE IS DIOVORCED AND LIVES WITH HER MOM----DID I TELL YOU THAT THE COPS FOUND SHANE S. DIED IN HIS APARTMENT HIS WEEKEND OF COURSE EVERYONE IS SAYING ITS DRUG RELATED BUT I GUESS HE HAD A BAD FOUR WHEELER ACCIDENT SUNDAY WHILE RIDING WITH HEBB AND MATT R. THEY WERE DRICKING A LOT I WONDER IF HE DID NOT THROW A CLOT OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT ----THE RUMORS ARE FLYING LIKE WILDFIRE ERIN B. HAD A BABY GIRL ABOUT A MONTH AGO MIKE IS DOING BETTER HE IS WALKING WIHOUT A CANE HE GOES BACK TO THE DOCTOR IN NOV. SADLY THATS ABOUT ALL HE HAPPENINGS IN THE VILLE SAM CALLED ME TODAY KEEP IN TOUCH
...and asked myself why the hell do I want to go to that? To relive collective judgment? Individually, they're all decent people, but it's the collective mentality plus the context of the situation that will bring out the worst. I had enough of that the first time around and even if I’m now sufficiently removed, it still won’t be pleasant to watch the eagerness with which they search for failure, indiscriminately assigning people roles and constructing falls from grace like they’re watching their very own tv show - DIDJA HEAR ABOUT? And, apart from that, there’s the disconcerting conjunction of banality and pathos to deal with.
Of course, there’s always the alternative plan to go but with my own script that would make them think a bit while giving them grist for the gossip mill. Inspired by tomluffman, who took a male friend back to his own small-town high school reunion and pretended to be gay. But I don’t know if the satisfaction of my own curiosity is worth the effort. I’m not even sure I have any curiosity.
