Basic central Thai is easy to learn. The grammar is fairly straightforward, the sentences can be very short, and there is comparatively limited vocabulary you need to know before you can get round to communicating. It is the pronunciation and tones which might take a bit more time. Learning script isn't necessary as there are usually supplementary signs and whatnot in English (I don't know if you've recently been to Thailand so sorry if that bit of info was redundant!).
Oh. If you have ice cream cravings in Thailand, I would recommend Iberry. Not quite as creative as Chin Chin Labs, but still flavours you don't really get in everyday ice cream shops, like seasonal Southeast Asian fruits. Also their green tea roulade thingy is really nice. 8D
