IC Information:
Name: Sabaku no Gaara
Fandom: Naruto
Timeline: Right after Gaara was defeated in battle by Deidara. He falls unconscious, and then is brought to the Facility.
Age: 15

Appearance: Gaara is tiny, standing only at 5’3”. He has a mop of messy red hair and his eyes are light blue, framed by dark black circles, since he never sleeps. His skin is pale, and on the left side of his forehead etched in red, is the Japanese kanji for “love.” He always wears a giant gourd on his back that contains special sand infused with his chakra. He wears a long red/purple coat with black pants and black sandals.

Abilities: Gaara has two main techniques that he uses: Sabaku Kyuu, which encases an enemy completely in sand, and Sabaku Sousou, which involves constricting the sand around an enemy so that it crushes either their entire body, or a part of their body.

He has a special passive technique, a sand shield that automatically protects him from any sort of attack. Also, a thin layer of sand encases his body in the rare occasion that someone actually does make contact with him, bypassing his sand armor. Another useful ability of Gaara’s is that he can turn the earth around him into sand as well if there isn’t any sand handy. However, the sand in his gourd is much more powerful in it’s ability to withstand attacks. It is the sand in the gourd that is used for the sand armor and most of his attacks. He has used sand that he created on the spot for his Sabaku Kyuu.

Gaara also has the power of Shukaku, the One tailed beast residing within him. He never sleeps because if he does, he will lose control of his body and Shukaku will take over and terrorize the country again.

Personality: Gaara used to be extremely fearsome to anyone and everyone, including his own siblings. He was the leader of the three-man squad from Sunagakure and anytime someone would show any sort of disagreement with him, he would issue a death threat that he could easily follow through with. He is no longer like that after meeting Uzumaki Naruto. Now, he wishes for nothing more than to be someone that some other person needs in their lives. His loneliness all of his life spawned hatred, but after meeting Uzumaki Naruto, he realized that he too could turn his loneliness into something positive. Instead of shutting everyone out, isolating himself and taking his troubles out on other people, he realized that working to form relationships and connections with people is more rewarding and will lead to an end to his loneliness. He is a natural leader, as seen by his ability to lead Sunagakure as the Kazekage and again, from his ninja cell. Gaara is ruthless against his enemies, not bothering to spare them their lives (save for the chuunin exams in which killing is frowned upon). He says only what is necessary, nothing more and nothing less. Gaara is happy to protect his village as Kazekage and would give his life to protect it.

History: Gaara had a terrible past when he was younger. From the moment he was born, his mother cursed him, giving him the name Gaara which stands for “a demon that only loves himself”, dooming him to his fate of loneliness. His father, the Kazekage, had cut military costs before Gaara was born. To compensate for the decrease in military spending, he sealed the One Tailed Beast, Shukaku, into his own son’s body, hoping that one day, his son would be strong enough with the demon inside of him to make up for the cut in costs. Because of this, the village was terrified that the beast would be on the rampage at any moment, and so ostracized Gaara.

He grew up very lonely, but he was still a fairly sane child until there was an attempt on his life by Yashamaru, his uncle, and also his mentor, whom he believed truly loved him. One night, Gaara was attacked by a single masked ninja. His sand shield protected him and attacked the ninja. Before he was about to die, he revealed himself as Yashamaru. He told Gaara that he had always resented him for being the cause of his sister’s (Gaara’s mother’s) death. He then revealed that he had bombs strapped to himself in case his assassination attempt should fail. He detonated the bombs, killing himself, but the sand from Gaara’s gourd protected him from the blast. After that, Gaara was plunged into a state of despair, allowing the sand to carve into his forehead the kanji for “love” to signify the meaning of his name.

Many assassination attempts were made thereafter, but Gaara ruthlessly killed anyone and everyone who tried. He felt he was always alone and he loved no one but himself, since everyone hated him and was afraid of him anyway.

Later, in the series, Gaara goes to Konohagakure to take the Chuunin exams in order to become a higher level ninja supposedly, but really, he was there to infiltrate Konohagakure and unleash Shukaku within it to cause destruction to the village. This plan was set back by Naruto, who defeated Shukaku after finding the strength to do so from the desire to protect his friends. As they both lay completely exhausted, Gaara realizes that Naruto is strong because there are people that he loves. When his brother and sister, Temari and Kankuro retrieve him after he has lost to Naruto, he apologizes to them. He does not say specifically why, but his siblings are so shocked that they accept the apology without question.

Later, Gaara learns to feel more compassion in general, wanting to have companions of some sort and wanting to be needed by others. After fighting with Naruto, he realized that caring for others and needing to protect someone is the way to find true strength. He appears to assist Rock Lee when the Konoha ninja are attempting to take Sasuke back from Orochimaru’s henchmen. Lee is still recovering from the wounds that Gaara himself had inflicted upon him. Gaara tells Lee that he has a great debt that he owes Konoha, referring to Naruto making him realize that he needed to change. He takes down Kimimaro, but not before making the realization that Kimimaro also had someone that was important to him that he fought for. Gaara realized that a person would rather have a bad person that’s important to them, than to be utterly lonely.

Two and a half years later, Gaara is the Kazekage of Sungakure. He decides to take this position because he wants to protect all of the villagers. His one true wish is to be respected by everyone there because all of his life he was shunned for carrying Shukaku in his body.

One day, an Akatsuki member, Deidara, entered the sand village in an attempt to capture Gaara since he had one of the tailed beasts residing within him. The Kazekage fought back, taking the fight to the skies and destroying one of Deidara’s arms in the battle. However, the Akatsuki member then created a large bomb that he dropped towards Sunagakure, forcing Gaara to use his sand to create a barrier between the bomb and the village. While Gaara was distracted, Deidara sent his last small bomb near the one opening in Gaara’s sand shield and detonated it. Gaara was able to block it in time with some of the chakra infused sand from his gourd, but that sand suddenly exploded. When the Kazekage had crushed Deidara’s arm, the Akatsuki member had quickly turned some of his sand into his explosive clay so that it would detonate when Deidara commanded it to, all the while still looking like sand. With the last of his strength, Gaara moved the sand that was over the village from the large bomb away so that the village would not be damaged and no one would be hurt. After the sand was out of the way, he fell unconscious, completely exhausted.
