What's in a name?

We had a discussion at work today regarding the subject of marriage. The topic is coming up at election this year for VA on whether or not to amend the state constitution to define marriage as a 1 man and 1 woman and to formerly not recognize any same-sex marriages. Some very interesting arguments I heard from the other side, but they all leave me ( Read more... )

I think a lot of people in Virginia don't understand that the proposed amendment to the Virginia Constitution would ban marriage-like benefits from anybody except married people. So argument #4 is right out the window, because it would effectively ban "unions."

It makes absolutely NO sense to me that people would back something so fundamentally unAmerican as a law which specifies that certain people get rights that others are completely denied.

Yeah, I was really surprised when I mentioned that in the topic. At first the person was saying she had no problem with unions just don't call them marriages and then I reminded her that unions are going to be banned to.

Sadly, I'm almost positive this amendment will pass. The only thing we can hope for then, I suppose, is challenging the constitutionality of such an amendment.

Basically, we just want the same rights as every other human in the united states. I just can't see how me getting married to a woman I love would threaten the "institute" of marriage. As if my getting married would make your marriage weaker. Fully, I didn't know I had the power to diminish the feelings two people have towards one another.

This is going to take a long time to pass... I seriously doubt that I'll be able to be legally married in my lifetime. However, the fact that it is such a heavily debated, hot topic IS a step in the right direction.

And once again, it really does my heart good to know I have your support. :)

I'd like to think that we'll see this kind of change in our lifetime, but I just don't know.

What saddens me more is upon self reflection. I wonder if I would care as much as I do over this issue if it didn't hit so close to home? Would I be interested at all? Or am I just bitter that a good friend is denied something she has every right to suffer...er, enjoy.
