Hey all,

So, say your sibling is about to have a kid, and you don't want to be called aunt/uncle Xan cause they aren't accurate. What do you do?

Xan

Get a Ph.D. and insist everyone call you "Dr."?

Alas, it didn't work for me either...

If I had a Ph.D, I could totally rock the Dr. Xan thing. But my sibling wouldn't call me that, and wouldn't tell the kid to either - they would think me pretentious then...

Good question! Very good question...

Some cultures use teh term "cousin" for a lot of different relatives. Perhaps that's a decent gender-neutral alternative?

Maybe - that seems to be the most common alternative everyone else suggests too, for that reason. I don't know if sibling will go for it - we have 35 first cousins already, and some of them have kids, and so the term is well-used in our extended family. I might end up Uncle Xan, as it's less irritating to me - I do identify as a guy, but I don't feel like an uncle. I mean, I'm only 23. My sibling is procreating already, like, wtf?

Also it's after the semester - do you want to get together and do dinner sometime?

ha! I'm terrible at replying in a timely manner!

Dinner sometime would be great! Let me know when. I'm available most nights :)

Is ok. Where were you thinking for location? And how does the Friday or Saturday after next sound (the 12th or 13th)?
