Mirage - Mazda Furai

Jan 13, 2013 22:24

Even though I haven't posted a "car that should be a Transformer"-post in quite a while, this time I couldn't resist.

Status: Concept car (being tested on various racetrackes around the world)
Revealed: 27 December 2007 on the North American International Auto Show in Detroit
Price: Can't be bought so far
Comment: "Furai" means "sound of the wind", the concept car is meant to blurr the lines between race cars and super sport cars

To find a fitting car for Mirage was surprisingly difficult. In G1 he traditionally had a Ligier, the first one Diaclone F-1 Ligier JS11 racer.

Sadly, Ligier nowadays has changed the kind of cars it builds, going for small family oriented ones, which left us a bit hanging. This is the reason why in 2006 Mirage suddenly changed into a Ford GT (though later toys did several redoes of the classical Ligier design of Mirage).

The Ford GT was a good choice. It made Mirage able to blend better in, while still giving him a heavy speed advantage over nearly everyone else. But fate didn't mean it good with Mirage this time either, and there was no new line for the Ford GT.

Or at least nothing that reached the standards. Only the best for our noble spy, after all. And then came a long this car:

Nice, right? But why Mirage?
1) The concept itself. Mirage's two distinct forms were a race car and a sports car. This concept combines these two without losing any of the speed, while adding a distinct 'flow' to it that hints at manoeuvrability and perfect control. In shirt, this car will not only overtake you. It will drive circles around you, while playing catch with the police and then vanish into the endless night.

2) The front. It possesses an innovative futuristic design, perfect for an elegant noble Transformer. It's as if the car is directly looking and assessing you, while not backing down an inch.
3) The name. Indeed, with Mirage's ability "furai", the sound of the wind, might be the only warning you get before he's on and past you.

4) Take a second and just look at the car. Despite its speed, it is powerfully built - a true warrior. But it also gives of kind of a dark vibe, as if it could be nothing more than a shadow in the night... Mirage's position as one of the best spys in the war has it's darker side of secrets and deaths as well. This car shows this. Shows that it is noble, expensive, fast - but also dangerous. You see it and then you don't. And you can only hope that he is truly somewhere else.

And here two other pictures, draws of the original concept - the only ones I've found of this car not in black and blue, but white-blue. It's lighter, friendly, and even more elegant. A prince of all race cars.
