it depends on a lot of things. i ended up getting a laptop because i thought that's what everyone did when going to college and mine is actually bigger than most. but i use it as a laptop more than i thought i would. i don't bring it to class or anything, but i bring it to the lounge or the library or wherever to write a paper, because the computers in the labs are almost always occupied, or my roommate is asleep or i just want to work on a paper right after class or something. it'd be a good idea to check out how many public computer clusters ku has and ask students there how full they usually are. if there are easily accessible computers, you might not need a laptop. and while shipping a laptop is so much easier cuz it takes next to no space, flat screen computers aren't huge space hogs either. they'd only take a teensy bit more space on your desk, but packing them to bring back home might be a struggle (only a slight one though). okay, i've rambled on for long enough about this. good luck deciding.

I have generally had a (really poor, relative to the time, my current one is 233MHz I believe) laptop and a decent desktop. I've also talked with a lot of friends who have relatively good laptops (As in they'd probably beat my desktop at most things....and they can play most games, which puts them ahead of almost all other notebooks) So I'll comment on this in addition to points already made (like personal like, and cost ( ... )

i'd have to agree with the comments above. lap tops are ok, but IMHO touchpads suck major azz. i'd much rather have a PC and maybe a PDA to jot down notes when in class and then you can download them into the PC with a hotlink. yes a laptop would be good if you're going to be going places and want to take your work with you, but some PDA's have regular computer brains in them, and the applications you use in your PC can be transferred into the PDA.

i hope college goes well for you *long distance hugz*
