Bare Destiny
Seohyun/Kyuhyun ; pg ; ~ words ; oneshot
Knowing other destinies is easy for Seohyun but her own road is unclear so she decides not to pursue it, until her own fate comes looking for her instead.
To Seohyun, fate is a piece of long, coloured string, tying two halves of a whole together always. Sometimes, it gets entangled with other strings. Sometimes, this particular string forms a tight knot with another string. The line is not straight or smooth. But it is never cut, never broken, and one day, the knot will loosen, the string will untangle, and two people meant for each other will meet for life.
Seohyun was a young thing, when she first saw. She doesn't remember what age she was exactly, but not above sixteen, definitely. She sees these strings binding two soulmates together. And not one has she passed who does not have a string tied to her wrist, except for her. Oddly enough, she never asks why she can see the strings of others, nor does she question why she can never see hers. Only a mild curiosity lingers, but it is small, and is buried within countless layers of consciousness.
Not being able to see oneself must be a price to see others.
This unique skill Seohyun possesses gives her many advantages, which she makes use of to become a matchmaker. It is not a bad thing to help soulmates find each other, and she is merely assisting, not intervening. Fate wouldn't want her intervening, she somehow knows.
Many a lonely soul comes to her with want and longing to end their abject solitude. And she succeeds, every single time. Her skill is useful in this way, and her business thrives, her name spread far and wide across the land, a woman of an uncanny matchmaking ability, who never fails to bring two lonely persons together for eternal matrimony. Regardless of wealth, status, beauty, she can always find a match, and always a perfect match. More come to her, but she always succeeds to find a partner for her clients.
That is, until this one man comes up to her.
Kyuhyun, he says, when he sits himself in front of her and helps himself to tea and cookies on the table. A rather fine, upright gentleman of above average looks. He owns a small store selling books and games, earning a good wage. Seohyun even finds herself slightly attracted to him. Of course, anyone with a love for a good book will always attract her attention. Such a man like him however, ought to be easy to find a partner for, with the strings leading their way.
Except this man has no string.
Which makes things a lot more difficult - she has never seen anyone without a string. This will complicate things, like looking for a needle in a haystack, literally. But she tries regardless, to find this nice man his soulmate.
Finding a person with no string proves to be harder than she thinks it is, no surprises, but she continues to try.
Most of her customers take about a week or two to meet their fated other half. Kyuhyun doesn't seem too disappointed about the wait though, which comes as a surprise to her, because most of her clients are impatient turds who refuse to wait more than a few days.
He comes to inquire about the matchmaking a lot, something wholly unnecessary. His presence is extremely welcome however, and she comes to enjoy his presence, even looking forward to the days when he will visit. After a stiff enquiry about the matchmaking, he will sit himself down and start talking about anything except
About 2 weeks later, Seohyun finally realises that no matter how much effort she puts in, she'll probably never find that soulmate.
This is the first time she has ever failed. Instead of sadness or regret, she feels a small sense of relief underneath her exterior of deep remorse when she meets her client. She doesn't think about how this would affect her business, but she does wonder why she doesn't feel enough about the fact that Kyuhyun could not find his soulmate.
"Mr Ch-" Seohyun starts when Kyuhyun comes in again one afternoon.
Kyuhyun frowns a little in mock disappointment. "I said to call me Kyuhyun!" He drops into his chair and grabs at the tea on the desk, as per usual.
"Professional standards; I'm not used to calling clients by their first name." Seohyun huffs.
Kyuhyun merely scoffs while he waves a cookie in front of her. "Well you can start getting used to it! C'mon, say it." He prods.
In a gesture of defeat, Seohyun mutters his name. This seems to satisfy Kyuhyun as he stuffed yet another cookie into his mouth.
"So, how's the matchmaking thing coming along?"
"I'm sorry but I couldn't find a suitable candidate," Seohyun replies quietly, hoping Kyuhyun won't get too mad about it.
He quirks an eyebrow. "Really?"
"Really."
"Excellent." Pushing aside his food, Kyuhyun leans over and takes her bare wrist, an unwavering, steadfast look on his face, before planting a small kiss on the side of her mouth.
She never knew her destiny, but looks like he came to find her instead.
