i see a capella in your interests...are the groups at skidmore any good? are they hard to get into? what's the audition process like? anything you could tell me about them would be awesome...thanx:)
There are 5 a capella groups at Skidmore: The Accents (all female), The Sonateers (all female), The Bandersnatchers (all male), Drastic Measures (co-ed), and The Dynamics (co-ed). They are pretty good, yes. In my opinion, some better than others. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately..), they are pretty difficult to get into. Perhaps this is because they're so popular.
The audition process can be different for different groups, but usually you just prepare a song and sing it for them. XD Also, they may want to hear your range by having you sing a scale. They then have call backs in which they may ask certain people to sing certain types of music. For example, if you sang a classical type song for your original audition, they may request that you come back and sing a pop song. In the call backs they'll also teach you a song and have you sing with the group to see how well you can blend or fit in/add to the group.
I'm not sure if this was the kind of info you wanted, let me know and I'll try to be more helpful :)

just out of curiosity, which are the better ones? And when choosing between a handful of really good candidates (who have good ranges and sing well and blah blah blah), what usually comes down to being the deciding factor? thanks again.
There's a common saying that getting in an a capella group has very little, if anything, to do with your vocal talent and everything to do with the way you look. There's a myth that when you walk in the room, you're immediatly judged and even before you open your mouth the singers have decided whether or not you even have a shot (this particularly pertains to the Dynamics). Of course, that's silly, and not true, though there's some truth to it. Many times amazing singers don't get chosen, don't even called back, and the people who get chosen can't sing. Very bizarre. However, for the most part, the people who are chosen are relatively talented. One thing about the groups, from what I understand, is that virtually every member in the group has to "okay" a member before they're invited to join. So if you have an enemy of some sort in a group, you really don't have a shot. This can be very unfortunate, but I feel it does help solidify the group. I'm really not sure how other schools do it
