Racked both meads off the fruit today.
The straight orange was pretty easy, only a wee bit of loss (few cups of space for the fruit). The cranberry was more of a loss, since the berries themselves took up a lot of room. Topped the straight up with a touch of leftover wedding mead from the fridge, and topped the cranberry up with a bit of leftover honey/cranberry juice mix from original mixing. Both were still a bit short so I decided to make a quick honey/water slurry and top both off. Not sure how that will effect things.
The cranberry mead is good, not sure you can really taste cranberry, just a little tarter and more complex. The straight it a little boring at the moment. Same honey/recipe as the wedding mead, so perhaps I'll blame the early harvest oranges I used (they weren't nearly as red in color, so the color of the mead is a little paler) as well as the fact that I tried oaking during primary fermentation. The last batch got a full ferment, then had 2 months + to sit in a carboy on oak. Perhaps in a few months it'l taste better.
For now, I'll let both clear again, and then bottle. Should be more than ready by the time
nyquil_driver's beer is carbed and ready. We'll see how it tastes then.
