I drove down into Washington State today as a test. I wanted to see how easy it would be to do with a driver's license and birth certificate but no passport. Kohl, who had pretty much the same ID as me, made it through in my car without any trouble at all! Awesome. Yep, a passport is still not yet a requirement for land crossings.

The official rule is that you need to prove ID and citizenship. As long as your ID is gov't issued and includes a pic, anything works. As for citizenship, a genuine birth certificate is fine as long as it is original and not a copy... Usually means it needs a raised seal on it and printed on special paper. Some border guards like to give you grief if you don't have a passport but that is just part of their game. They are trained to get you riled up and gage your reactions. That's why they sometimes ask off the wall questions, just to see how you react.

So far, I have not heard of anyone turned back at the border because a drivers license/birth certificate combo wasn't good enough. In fact, when they first changed the rules, they announced locally that we can go downtown and get a pocket sized legal copy of our birth certificates to use at the bridge!

Heya! I'm, like, down here and stuff. I'm planning on coming into the Bay area for one of the social things that supposedly go on there on Wednesday. If I'm not mistaken there's a pizza thing, a taco thing and the original coffee thing. I'd probably rather do the Wing thing on Thursday but we're seeing a movie at that time. Meh. Umm... so yeah, what's your phone number dude? My cell is 778-991-1827 but I misplaced my charger before coming down so I"m not leaving it on, just turning it on very infrequently to check messages. If you message me your contact info then I can call you from Patch's cell tonight or something.
