It doesn't matter. I didn't get most of what you said anyway.

I can imagine. I found it rather confusing when I came to the quarter I now live in, though I've become accustomed to it now. Nevertheless, I was unpardonably rude to you both.

My name is Silk; I don't think I ever introduced myself.

It's not unpardonably rude if no one cares.

... Silk. That's cloth, isn't it?

Being threatened didn't bother you, my son?

Yes, a soft cloth, woven from fibers made by a small caterpillar.

...

I'm not your son, and you're not that big a threat.

And you were named after it?

A needler is nothing to laugh at, although admittedly I'm not a practiced shot. And I didn't mean to offend-- it's a force of habit; augurs are trained to regard all men and women as their children.

The custom in Viron-- my city-- is to name girls after flowers and plants, and boys after animals, or their parts or products. Since silkworms are animals, Silk is a masculine name, though not a terribly common one.

Then stop. ... What's a needler?

It shoots slender metallic needles very quickly at the target; a friend of mine told me that, the way they're cut on the ends will cause them to veer off course inside a body, in order to do as much damage as possible.
The one I have is not mine; augurs do not normally carry weapons. I'm determined, though, to return it to its proper owner. I wouldn't fire upon anyone under normal circumstances, but while cursed I believed myself to be someone very different.

... How do the needles even get

Your world is weird.

From your perspective I'm sure it is, though from my perspective, your whorl-- world-- is the peculiar one.
