[Silk is seated, presumably, in front of his computer; a large red 'T' is emblazoned on the plain black shirt he generally wears in lieu of proper augur's robes. He does not begin to speak immediately, contemplating his image on the screen, stroking at his cheek thoughtfully.]This curse, although it encourages a kind of honesty most ( Read more... )

Are you sure the T doesn't stand for Tricky? I find it really hard to see you as anything close to a Thief or a Traitor as possible. Even wth your explanation of it all.

Wait, if we're talking about negative qualities being epitomized by the letters, then what does mine-- Oh. [Pause] So it's not Radical, huh.

Although theft is wrong, many thieves are good men at heart. What one does isn't the same as what one is, and Pas loves all men and women, regardless of their misdeeds. Besides, I hardly think I'm tricky-- I do my best to be honest, unless I have no other choice.

That's merely what I've inferred from others' comments-- I could be wrong. I'd rather be marked as a theodidact than a traitor, after all. You are something of an extreme personality but I'd hardly number that as a negative trait.

Hearing you say that makes me feel a little better about myself. [Shifting as she moves around with her voice communicator; she only says this because she's a thief herself] But I agree. Sometimes things do need to be done out of necessity, isn't that right.

I'd much rather be Radical than what I'm thinking my letter stands for. Considering half the people on the network are jumping around making claims it stands for a sin, yeaaah, I doubt mine means Radical anymore, but thanks, Silk.

I think if your T means either Traitor or Thief, you had your reasons. We shouldn't be judged for something we might've been forced to do under situational circumstances.

The law judges, but only to keep citizens safe; in a moral sense, no man has the right to judge another. That is reserved from the gods, whose eyes do not see as mortal eyes do. Only Pas knows his Plan. We must do our best to behave well and do no wrong; but we can be forgiven as well, provided we ask the gods for their grace.

I am sure that, whatever you have done, you've had good reasons. Bad deeds do not make a bad person, and I feel no doubt as to the quality of your character. If you ever wish to be shriven, Veronica, let me know.

...Y'know, pal, T could also stand for "talks too much". Ever think of that?

I'm rather accustomed to speaking in some depth; I'm sorry if I have offended you. Certainly it is a fault of mine, considering the brevity that is customary here.

He says names I know, but strangely. Stygian. Scylla.

So they're to force us into confession. Lacking the agenbyte of inwit. False confessions, if it's that.

Confession should never be forced; for that the City is at fault, if others feel compelled to explain their marks. And generally shriving is done in private, for the shame most feel at admitting their wrongs keeps them from speaking truthfully in front of others.

Save before a priest, or so the dogma follows after.

In my whorl, an augur. Though a layman may shrive as well, under certain circumstances.

Are you afflicted, Stephen Dedalus?

The letters mean bad things, right?

They do, Lucy. At least that is how it seems. Unfortunately few men or women are wholly free from wrongdoing. The best we can do is be honest with ourselves and with the gods.
