Is canon sacrosanct re: "Wicca"?

Since we're approaching an equinox (which happens to be one of the eight festivals of the Wiccan year), it seems like an appropriate time to address an issue that occasionally bugs me in fanfic: the use of Wicca when one actually means Wiccan. Many fic writers have picked up the skewed usage based on original lines from the series, such as “ ( Read more... )

Interesting. I think as a writer I tend to take some of the Buffy terms on face value and don't stop to think if they are incorrect or improper when I incorporate them. I suppose I just assumed that they were well versed and didn't consider double checking on them. I think it is in the same way that I assume the demons, dimensions and imaginary worlds are being described accurately. Rediculous.

When I watch a TV series or a film, I assume (perhaps like you) that the writers did at least a bit of research. If I weren't already familiar with the terms Wicca/Wiccan, I wouldn't have caught the error. Now I blame Mutant Enemy for disseminating inaccurate info, disrupting grammar, and making civilization as we know it crumble. Okay, that might be overstating things a bit, but you get my drift. ; )
