Why I read fanfic

I'm one of those people intimidated by a blank page -- or in this case, a blinking cursor. I've been on LJ since the end of October -- a little over four months now -- and I've wanted to do an initial journal entry. But it intimidated me. What to write? I felt pressure to be insightful, perhaps clever, or at least "on topic" (Buffyverse). Well, the ( Read more... )

I discovered fanfic less than 2 years ago, and I'm still amazed at the quality and creativity that can be found.

And definitely don't downplay the importance of your work--I know I've really appreciated it, as have all the readers who haven't had to endure my typos and other stupidities. A good story can be totally ruined by lack of editing.

Less than two years ago?! I would have guessed much longer, based on the sheer volume of your work.

I agree about the importance of editing -- and it's truly a pleasure to read anything you've done.

I started writing The Right Tool in November 2008. But I'd been reading fanfic for about 6 months before that.

And thank you. :-)

So now I'm curious: were you writing before doing fanfic? Or did the talent and desire suddenly arise, like Venus from the foam?

Oh welcome to lj. You should de-lurk more often. :)

Thank you muchly for the welcome! And based on how fun it is to get replies, I may consider de-lurking more regularly. :)

As you know, I have been writing fan fic for five years.
It's a diversion, it's a hobby and sadly, it becomes an obsession.
It is also a gateway to meeting new and wonderful friends like you.
You are a sweetheart and your help is muchly appreciated!
*hugs*

I didn't actually know how many years you've been writing, Bee, so it's interesting to hear that. (You might be one of the LJ Buffyverse long-timers?) I agree about LJ friends -- I haven't met many yet, but everyone I've gotten to know has been both interesting and kind. A winning combination in my book! It's a joy to be working with you -- thanks for giving me that opportunity. *big hug back*

So interesting to hear that you discovered the series and started writing fanfic during a difficult time of your life as well. (Sympathies on your losses, especially of mom.)

Thanks for the chuckle over your whichclothes comment! Yes, many of us were playing (or reading) while other bright little gals were writing. Luckily we all grew up to be interesting women interacting on LJ, though! ; )
