Finding a place to live before living in the actual city is a pain. Speaking from experience. Just keep at it and it will work out.

Sometimes the potential landlords are willing to take pictures and email them to you. I also wrote out a cover letter which I emailed out along with my references because I never met with half of the places I "looked at" in Chilliwack.

And landlords only care about where you work because they want to make sure that they'll get paid. Bleh on them for that.
