For the darling flowerchorus on her birthday!

Title: The Probability in Beginning
Series: Gundam 00
Pairing: Lockon/Tieria
Rating: G
Summary: Even before the battles, something passes between Lockon and Tieria.

They were still in the process of learning how to work around each other. This time, it was just Neil Dylandy - no, Lockon - and Tieria Erde who were at one of the tables in what passes as the Ptolemaios' dining area. Setsuna and Allelujah were still training - they were taking turns at resting and refreshing. The silence stretched out between them. Lockon has noticed that Tieria has many different kinds of silences. There was first the "I would like to pass judgment on your capabilities but do not have the authority to do so" sort of silence which had been experienced by each of Tieria's fellow Meisters. There was also the "there is no need to speak" silence", which was often interchangeable with the "Veda's orders are absolute" silence. Right now, however, Lockon was currently experiencing a new kind of silence from Tieria: the "I am eating" silence. Lockon thought he preferred this third type of silence over the other two, and by quite a large margin. It lacked a certain - well, he wouldn't call it 'murderous intent' - ferocity. The intensity, however remained. He could imagine Tieria considering this as "Mission 21: Midday Meal".

Lockon shuffled the meat and salad around in his lunch plate. It wasn't that that the quality of the food was lacking. Celestial Being, after all, wanted its members to be in the optimum physical condition. Rather, it was that he was unused to such rich food after years of dry rations and nutriment snatched from battlegrounds. There was a dull rectangle of checkered red on the ground near the leg of the table. He paused in his rearrangement of his lunch into a miniature continent and sea, and bent down to retrieve it. It was a packet of cards, probably left behind by Lichty or another of the crew. There was no response from Tieria besides a slight narrowing of his eyes.

"Pick a card." The deck fanned out on the table in front of Tieria, Lockon's fingers rested at the edges. Tieria's eyes narrowed further.
"This is inappropriate, Lockon Stratos. What is this, a gambler's game?" Lockon smiled wryly in reply.
"Pick one, just pick one. There's no harm in it." Lockon thought he could see the calculations in Tieria's mind - whether it was more advantageous to just humour him or refuse. The latter seemed to be the result as Tieria, somehow both tentatively and sharply, withdrew a card from the middle of the deck and slid it across to Lockon. He could feel the silence developing into a "I would like to pass judgment on your capabilities but do not have the authority to do" silence with plenty of ferocity and murderous intent to match.
"Ah. The eight of clubs. Congratulations, Tieria Erde! You'll have good luck." Tieria's whole face was now the same as the tone of his silence. Balancing the plate on the palm of his left hand, Tieria pushed back his chair and stood up.
"Lockon Stratos, you are a..." Lockon waited, expectant, but before finishing his statement, Tieria left the room.

The deck still remained spread on the table. Tieria's chair remained away from the table.

Lockon remembered the man and soldier who had first demonstrated that card trick to him. His own reaction of "this isn't the time and place to be kidding around with fortunes". He had been eighteen, and then twenty as he learnt the chance and change of war amidst gunfire. Why had he chosen, been drawn, to share that with Tieria?

Tieria walked towards the bridge, the routes inside the Ptolemaios as familiar to him as the circuitry of his veins. You'll have good luck. It was ridiculous. This wasn't the time and place for it. The time and place for these cards games, or for the uncertainty, the surprise. Why did Lockon Stratos manage to elicit such emotion from him?

Lockon, Tieria wondered.
