Kyuhyun being brought home in a casket had been unexpected.

“Lee Sungmin-shi?” Sungmin nodded, his heart completely still as he stared at the man in front of him, wearing a familiar marine jacket with golden stripes marking him as an officer.

‘Unexpected’ was an understatement.

He had known what the officer had come to say, even before the man had said it. He should have screamed, fought the officer or cursed God. But his body was numb as he just fell to his knees, whispering; “No.”

Horrid, not just heart-breaking, but heart-tearing. Like sharp nails clawing at his heart, tearing, ripping, until it was deemed unusable. That it still was capable of beating and keeping him alive was a miracle.

“No, it can’t be.” He didn’t know if the officer heard him at all. He hadn’t noticed his own tears until he looked up at the man and only saw his blurry figure. “I have a last request.”

His request had been unexpected. Not horrid or heart-breaking, just unexpected. But they granted it to him. He was officially allowed to sleep one last time next to his husband.

“It’s.. I guess it can be done, sir.” The officer had said. Sungmin dried his eyes with the back of his hand and forced himself to pretend not to see the tears in the officer’s eyes. Marines were supposed to be strong and he knew how much Kyuhyun would have hated it if someone had notices his own tears, had he been the one to bring such a message to a family member, husband or wife.

And now, here he was, lying on a madras next to Kyuhyun’s casket, the night before the burial.

“If it’s any comfort, he loved you very much, Sir. Everyone knew how much he wanted to get home, so he could be with you again.” Sungmin accepted the words without detecting the mix of regret and envy in the voice.

The crying had seized and Sungmin now lay completely still, staring at the ceiling. He sighed and grabbed his phone from where it lay on the floor. ‘Kyuhyun’ he named the playlist and began browsing through his songs, adding those that reminded him of his husband. Then he pressed play and let the music flow throughout the room.

He closed his eyes, letting himself going back in time.

“I’m not going to be with anyone else while I’m away, babo!” Kyuhyun was already laughing at him, even though he had promised to take his question seriously.
“I love you. And only you, Lee Sungmin. Remember the marine’s motto? Semper fi, always-”
“always faithful. I know, I know.” Now Sungmin, too, was laughing, though it was cut off when Kyuhyun leaned in to kiss him.

He had been certain to the bone that Kyuhyun would come home, that he would come home still loving him. Sure, Kyuhyun still loved him, but wasn’t the ‘coming home’-part more important?

The marine who was standing guard coughed, trying to get Sungmin’s attention.

Reluctantly, he opened his eyes. It was the same man who had given him the message of Kyuhyun’s death.

“Yeah?” he asked him.

“Do you want us to continue standing watch while you sleep?”

“That’s what he would have wanted.” He fought the tears back and continued; “if he ever loved anyone else, it would have been the people he served with. He would have wanted us both to be here, I know.”

Sungmin’s eyes went to the marine officer’s name tag. ‘Lee Donghae’ it read.

“He’s in love with me, Minie.. He knows I love you and he knows that I’m faithful - he even wants me to stay with you.” It was more painful listening to Kyuhyun’s voice than it was to hear his words.
“Then what is it that bothers you?” he had asked and Kyuhyun had told him, with a rare sweetness in his voice; “It hurts me every time I look at him. Because I know that he’ll always love me silently and we both know that I’ll always only love you.”

“I know who you are.” He whispered, loud enough for only the officer to hear it.

“I know that you’ll keep us safe through the night.”

The officer stared blankly ahead for a while, then nodded. “I will.”

Sungmin turned to the casket, put a hand on it and said, loud enough for anyone to hear. “Goodnight Kyuhyunie. I love you.”

And inside his head he could hear Kyuhyun answer him back with a “love you too, Minie.”
