Today's discovery- apparently Arabia (ifonlyuntil9's cat) is an angry drunk.  ifonlyuntil9 accidentally spilled some mojito on her, and she suddenly started getting all pissy and hissing at everyone as she cleaned herself.  whoops

I've read that Tyco Brahe had (in addition to his enormous island palace devoted entirely to astronomy and parties) a trained moose that would stand at the table at parties and eat and drink with the rest of his buddies. Tragically, one evening the moose had way way way too much beer, fell down the stairs, and died.

Stories are awesome, and Renaissance era astronomers and mathematicians tended to live very interesting lives. Brahe especially so because he was fabulously wealthy--apparently he was planning on moving out of Denmark to go do research someplace else, and the king of Denmark realized (ahead of his time?) that national brain drain was a thing that should be avoided, so he pretty much gave Brahe whatever he wanted, including an island where he could construct the Uraniborg, a huge castle devoted entirely to astronomical observations (and parties, apparently; plus there was an alchemy lab in the basement).

tehe. Also entertaining since I'm taking a history course that's the history of intellectuals from Renaissance to Enlightenment, so I'm actually getting to learn about some of these crazy people :)
