All That Glitters/Part 23

Brian was becoming exasperated. He didn't trust Jerry *or* Mandy, and he
hadn't seen either one of them since he returned to the tour. He was
exhausted and heartsick, and that put him in a bad temper. With a barely
concealed moue of disgust, he strode offstage and nearly collided with the
very person he sought. "Mandy!"

"Hello, Brian," his wife said almost cautiously. What did *she* have to be
cautious about?

"I've been looking for you."

"Oh."

"Yes. *Oh*. We had a deal. You bring the divorce papers. I sign the
divorce papers. We get divorced. And we both get to live happily ever
after," Brian snapped.

"Without each other."

"That *was* the general idea, yes."

Mandy smiled as though her carefully painted face would break.
"Ummm...there's a slight problem with that."

"Why?" Brian demanded.

"I'm..."

"Yes?"

"Don't be mad."

Brian gritted his teeth and counted to ten silently. Twice. "I'm not mad.
I'd just like to know what the bloody hell is going on."

"I've been seeing someone else," she blurted out.

"Great," Brian all but shouted. Now he could be free. Now he and Curt
could be together. He could hardly wait to call him himself. He doubted
Jerry kept his word. He simply wasn't that type of man.

"It's Jerry."

"Oh." Brian looked puzzled at first, then his face suddenly cleared. "Oh."

After a few moments, Brian continued, "I still don't see the problem."

"We can't get a divorce. We're having a baby," Mandy wailed, wringing her
hands.

Brian laughed, that sputtery laugh that drove women *and* men wild.
"*We're* not having anything."

It wasn't his. It couldn't be. He hadn't slept with Mandy
since...well...since Curt.

He broke into an irrepressible grin. "Thank you!" he sang.

"For what?"

"For making my life a living hell." Brian kissed her soundly, then
chuckled as he started to walk away.

"But you can't divorce me now! I'm pregnant!"

Brian turned and tapped his temple with one finger, as though he was
suddenly reminded of something. Then he smiled faintly and pointed the
finger at his soon-to-be ex-wife. "Oh, yeah. Good luck with that."
