What a lovely surprise to brighten this drear morning!
The imagery of Gandalf, eager and asking to hold the child, and his soothing her in some imagined tongue, was wonderful, and the mention of his tending hobbit-babes, three of them fitting in Elenir's bed, warmed my heart.

Halbarad was quite right in his determination to chastise the young guard, and also his concern that she not baby them so! It's a painful lesson, and I'm glad to see Nienelen taking it to heart.

Oh, what fear in her heart as she waits on Gandalf's words! I can just imagine the pounding of her heart as she listens, and the relief over that fear, at least.

:D You can probably also imagine my own surprise at posting this chapter. "What? It's ... it's.. DONE?" :-P I've never been more glad to be finished with a chapter... only took me 2 months.

Oh, what fear in her heart as she waits on Gandalf's words!

I'm glad this comes across. I really struggled with this chapter.

Thanks Ann. :)

It's a lovely chapter, very understated in its anguish. (And I was giggling over HotDaddy!Gandalf all morning.)

men seek the warmth of their hearth by which to work, all but for two of the Angle who upon the hallmoot their folk deemed unworthy. Yoked together they were and together they pull the plough upon their furrows in which to sow the winter wheat.
That's a really good solution - it's harsh enough to keep anyone from thinking the men are getting off easily, it's a job that needs to be done, and I'm sure it'll make the two of them think twice or at least count to ten before losing their tempers so completely. Plus it's a public punishment, that I'm sure hits their pride as well. I am curious to see what Aragorn will think of it, however.

My son stared at them solemnly as we passed, and later, when I tucked his bed's furs about him, pleaded with me to relieve them of their suffering
Aw, what a thoughtful, sweet boy!

Thanks, El. :) Yeah, plus they'll eventually learn that they have to work toGETHER, or they'll not make it (hopefully).

Yeahhhh... he's a sweetie.

Why is the Toucan Sam song running through my head? EL has the nose that knows.. when you're trying to sneak something pass.. be it the elusive flavor of vague or clashing smell of inconsistency. :D Yes'm! You're quite right, it's now on my list "Stuff to Address." :)
