What do you eat?

An interesting question yoinked from dancingwolfgrrl

Did you know that it is the week of eating in? Ok, actually, me either, until recently. But this has made me curious!

By my count, there are fourteen non-breakfast meals in the week. How many of them do you and your family cook at home? How many of those rely on prepared foods (canned soup, frozen ( Read more... )

Interesting. Scott and I were talking about this recently. We eat in a lot more than we used to, and we put a lot more emphasis on foods we've made ourselves (though I do keep packaged soups, pizzas, and a few entrees around for those nights when we're really tired.)

It's been a gradual shift for us, but one of the major things is that we have a house with a kitchen that's a really useable space, and that makes cooking so much easier. In our old place, two plates and a pot filled the sink, and the space was small and really awkward to cook in. A dishwasher, and lots of open counter space, plus the second fridge for storage, have made a huge difference for us.

We have a Meal System(tm). I cook the following almost every week: 1 dozen muffins, 1 loaf of bread, 1 casserole (which serves for 2 to 3 meals for the two of us), 1 crockpot of a pulse-based soup, and 1 "nice dinner" (home-made pizza and home-made pasta count as "nice dinner"). My other half usually cooks Sunday brunch, and often one dinner during the week as well. We eat out in a restaurant maybe once a month, usually because a social event we want to attend is happening in said restaurant. We're starting to get very picky about restaurant food, because what we eat at home is so good...

We try to keep the packaged foods to a minimum, though that's a little harder during the winter. Luckily our local farmer's market is a source of local, organic, home-made convenience foods, such as jams & jellies, Jamaican patties and sliced lunchmeats.

Being 30 minutes drive from a large grocery store has forced us to be a lot more organized about meal planning.
