Oh Noes, Car Woes!

On Saturday night I was driving down Bell Road, having dropped a friend off at her place, when suddenly I felt a "bang!" and my steering went out of control. Thank goodness I was slowing down and Bell Road was mostly deserted. I pulled the car off the road and called AAA. (The first tow truck they sent for me blew a tire, but the second got there ( Read more... )

Barb and I were talking about it, and she has a good point -- you might be in a place where fixing up Bessie might be better, since it's only a one-time $1500 drop instead of getting new car payments, higher insurance and registration, etc.

But on the other hand, cheaper gas. :/ Hard to say.

Well, it's $1500 to make her street safe, $4500 to fix everything. If I can find a car cheap enough that I can pay for all at once that already has air and working windows, It'd be cheaper to get that even if it doesn't have great gas mileage. No car payments! Out of pocket or nothing.

I thought I had a lead on a 1995 Dodge Neon, but it turned out to be listed as having an automatic transmission but was really a stick shift. I might have a lead on an old Thunderbird. If Stanley's gives it their seal of approval, I'll go with that, if it is in 100% good shape, provided it is priced the way I was told and has working air and so on. Not buying anything without Stanley's looking at it first! If my few leads don't pan out, then I'll do what I can with Bessie.

Well, if you CAN get a good reliable car for about the same price, then, YEAH.

I'd have loved that Neon, but I know you don't like driving stick (even better gas mileage!).

Dunno how to drive stick. Plus it seemed to need a few repairs.

I may have a line on an old Thunderbird. The gas mileage is comparable to Bessie's--not great, but it shouldn't be any worse, either. I'll have to see if it's available and if I can have Stanley's look at it. I am not even slightly influenced by John Hiatt's song about a Thunderbird. Ahem.
