My husband is a tattoo collector and his strategy is to find an artist whose work he looooves (most have their portfolios online) and then gives them some reference images and instructions and lets them come up with the final design (of course he can still request changes before anything is permanent). In all cases, the art has turned out even better than he had hoped. If you do this, you will have to give the artist a nonrefundable deposit (around $50) just in case they spend time creating something for you and you end up not wanting to go forward with it.

Reading it again yesterday I felt like maybe just the second sentence actually fits. I'm not sure how much of the words should be in the tattoo.
