Title: A Game of Pretend
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Pairings: NONE (how did this happen???)
Rating: K+ (once again, how did I mange this???)
Warnings: um... None. Again. I am so on a roll. XD
All Organization XIII members were masters at pretending.
Demyx was reminded of this every time he looked at Roxas.
Every time Xemnas droned one of his monologues (which was often and annoyingly loud) or when Xigbar barked a laugh after sneaking up on another member (he abused his power frequently to drop in on everyone at awkward moments) they were pretending. Every time Xaldin rolled his eyes (which he did so often Demyx was expecting his eyes to stick upside down anytime now) or when Vexen shrieked (more than not at some failed experiment trying to eat/burn/freeze/break another (failed) experiment) they were pretending. Every time Lexeaus grunted (which he did more than talking) or when Zexion used words no one recognized (he got sick enjoyment out of this) they were pretending. Every time Saix snapped at someone (did he ever not snap at someone?) or when Axel smirked a sarcastic comment (usually accompanied with over zealous hand-gestures) they were pretending. Every time Demyx himself smiled an empty-headed smile (he preferred the term 'laid back', because he totally had a brain, thank you very much) or when Luxord grinned triumphantly (after he'd won a bet - again) they were pretending. Every time Marluxia cooed at his plants (which responded to him with licks instead of the nasty, fanged bites they gave everyone else) or when Larxene sneered (at everyone and everything, living and nonliving, innocent and guilty alike) they were pretending. Every time he watched Roxas smile even through the head-lock Lexeaus had the blonde and Axel in, they were all pretending.
All Organization XIII members were masters at pretending, it practically came with your number and coat.
Demyx was reminded of this every time he looked at Roxas, at his happy smile and heard his care-free laugh.
What became more and more obvious, though, was that Demyx wasn't sure what they were pretending anymore.
With every time the sitarist saw the young blonde he wondered, were they pretending they had emotions, or were they pretending that they didn't (to make the darkness seem less scary, to make the Heartless seem beatable, to make it hurt less when Kingdom Hearts didn't work; the reasons were endless, but un-noted).
Demyx was sure, more and more sure with each passing mission (because, seriously, who the hell knew what day it was in this Castle of No Calendars) that they had to have hearts.
Because Roxas' smile was just too happy, to care-free, to real to be just a game of pretend.
Wow. That was fun. Thought of it in science class, since I was Not Paying Attention (like always).
I love it. Seriously. (And this has nothing to do with the fact that Demyx is SO much fun to write nor the fact that Roxas the Adorable is in it! PROMISE!!!)
