Well I once heard that there are 5 ways to show love or affection:
1 - Spending quality time together
2 - Doing something for someone
3 - Giving a gift
4 - Tell them
5 - Touch

Different people will rank these differently of course - and may rank differently for giving and receiving.

So I think a nice birthday present would combine all of these elements!

My ranking is something like: 2, 4, 1, 5, 3

I am totally blown away whenever someone does something for me. But I think quality time is probably the most beneficial and memorable of the list.
