A bunch of years ago at a conference I was talking to someone who I have a lot respect. She thought I should leave the SCA. I told I didn't think I was done with it or it wasn't done with me. Now may be that time

What make you think I'm done attending K'zoo, or any other conference? Hell, I'm thinking about next year, and I suspect the next "Viking Congress" would be something I wouldn't want to attend?
I don't really have any objection to your raising money to donate a firetruck to the museum; it's a community thing--not for an individual.
Ok, you don't like my language. I don't like their condescension. I still think it's bullshit, if you wanna know.
But I understand your silence. Seriously, it's hard to make yourself a target, and make no mistake--folks just love having a target. I have absolutely nothing to loose, and, well, on a emotional scale, as an A&S enthusiast and SCAian, you have lots to loose. Also, make no mistake, the SCA and the EK run on emotion.
While the above rhetoric may seem an obnoxious personal attack, I hope you see that it's also the reality of the A&S movement. It's a fuckin' sad reality, to be sure, but I look it this way. They can't stop me from doing arts or whatever anyone wants to call it. If my foul words prick their conscious for just a moment, then so much the better.
The SCA has always been full of people asking people to support them financially so they can play the game, or just manage the niceties of life (like vet bills).
Furthermore, Every.Darn.Year. I have gotten hit up to make prezzies for a sports team (The Army of the East) I don't give a damn about-- prezzies that would cost me time, money, and effort. And if I don't want to do that, and I object to being solicited -- it's not like people are out there on the fighting field handing out embroidery kits to guys in armor-- I'm told I'm a horrible person who hates the very essence of the SCA.
Someone wants to do a formal kickstarter to go do some academic conference because their work won't pay for it and they can't get a grant? Well, at least they aren't in my face begging for Royal Travel fund donations, and since it's kickstarter presumably if you pony up you get something in return?
P.S. if you want to kickstart funding for a research publication, I'll contribute...
I have to concede that you make the best counter arguement; why should you be concerned about what the "Army of the East" is doing? Why should you be concerned about what the East Kingdom is doing in the first place? Many folks who live in the EK aren't, and, yes, I would object to being called a horrible person because I didn't want to contribute my time, effort, and money
( ... )
Presumably there is to be some sort of creative project involved, not just going to the conference, right? That being the rules of Kickstarter. I can't find this kickstarter on their site and I don't get whatever list it's been discussed on.
Agreed. I can't keep up, can't keep track, am really tired of being told that I have to donate time/money/goods, fed up with being told I have to be part of some major effort.
What happened to the days when you showed up and people were simply happy you came?
