What do I normally do with my hands?

LJ, I would ask you where the last month has gone, but I know where the last month has gone: into the copyediting void. I took a freelance gig for my old boss, which ate up all my time and brainpower (but paid well, so)--and now that I'm done, I'm all, boooorn freeeee, as free as the wind bloooows. I can do WHATEVER I WANT ( Read more... )

road trip!, yum!, books

I think "the perfect blend of crass and heartfelt" is the best description of Shameless I've ever seen. Hats off to you, madam!

I've never read Mansfield Park, either. I've started it once or twice and I always come down on the "sorry, Jane, life's too short!" side of the spectrum and end up dropping it.

WHY THANK YOU. It just...it's really kind of a lot of both. In a good way! It actually reminds me of something Amy Sherman-Palladino might come up with, were ASP writing for cable and trying to be gritty yet heartwarming.

Ha! This has basically been the consensus among Austenacious readers, as well--a LOT of people were all, "Of course you haven't read it! Nobody's read it! We totally don't like that book!"

So far so good, though.

Alcatraz is... entertaining, but not great. I give it a solid B- at this point. It's on FOX, though, so it'll probably be canceled by the time you read this sentence. :P Cory wants to check out Awake, and we've seen a few random scenes from Shameless here and there, so we want to catch up on that too. Is it in its second season?

Have a great mini break this weekend!

Thanks for the reality check on Alcatraz. I just can't decide, which probably means I'm not watching it anytime soon.

Heh! I think it's doing okay--and hey, if Terra Nova can get as far as it did, I feel like this has a chance?

Is it in its second season?

UH? I'm not sure. But I haven't seen any online chatter about it, so I'm going to guess not yet.

I looked it up out of curiosity, and yes, it's in Season 2 right now.

Terra Nova is canceled, lol. So maybe hold off on Alcatraz for a while and see what happens. I have a feeling it's going to get canned before they answer any questions.

I just watched the first two episodes of Alcatraz, and it's pretty good. I'm intrigued by the premise, the actors are engaging, Sam Neill is really rather scary, so check it out when you have the time.

I'm honestly thrilled that Bones is coming back soon!

Ooh, really? Is he the bad guy? (Realization: I have NO IDEA what this show is about.)

You know, my Bones squee has been a little broken this season, but I (as always and for no legit reason) have high hopes for the second half. We get a sneak preview tonight, so....I may be reporting back on that. Will also be attempting to make TJ Thyne or Michael Grant Terry fall in love with me. Fingers crossed. (Kidding! Kidding! Sort of!)

I don't know if he's the bad guy or not. I've only watched the first two episodes, but he certainly seems a little morally gray. I may watch more eps this weekend, since Tyson's gone all day Saturday.

See, I've loved this season of Bones, so my squee is in full flame. *g*

I think you would love Smash. It's really not as much about the Megan Hilty vs. Katharine McPhee thing as they would have you believe. I mean, it is, but I really find Debra Messing and Christian Borle's characters (the writer/composer team) to be the heart of the show.

It's totally silly and soapy and dramatic, as you would expect a show about theater to be, but I unabashedly love it. And they do these musical numbers where it starts out in the rehearsal space and then switches over to what it would look like onstage that I think are just magical.

There's not enough Anjelica Huston, but twas ever thus.

ETA: Mansfield Park is my least favorite Austen. I haven't read Persuasion. I keep starting it and never finish it and I know so many people love it, but I just can't slog through it.

So...this actually helps a lot. sarita-m also had some good things to say that eased my fears. Maybe I'll try it out? I like silly soapy dramatic fun.

Persuasion is sad and great, but not necessarily something to read when you're feeling old and single (except for the happy ending, of course). My mom tried to read it as her first Austen and was all, "...who is this Jane Austen person? This is SUPER BORING." I told her to try again with one of the more entertaining/less melancholy ones.
