At the time, it was the largest man-made explosion ever. It wouldn't be surpassed in size and devastation until Hiroshima.

The Halifax Explosion flattened my city in 1917 during WWI, and killed more Nova Scotians in the blink of an eye than the war itself. I can't really think of a comparable disaster to bring up to my American friends. It wasn ( Read more... )

That is amazing and horrifying at the same time.

I think the anchor shaft that was blown over 2 miles was just disturbing.

Wow, I grew up in Dartmouth, got to learn about the explosion Every Single Year and yet, I had never heard about the christmas tree, and didnt know that Halifax sends a christmas tree to Boston.

Hi rick here. someone on my friends list sent me the Orly Campaign™ post. I felt, um, compelled to friend you.

On related subject, wife and I visited N.S. for two weeks on a motorcycling trip August before last. We spend some time at the Halifax Maritime Museum and was surprised at the existence of the explosion, as well as the extent of the damage.

Agreed, quite sobering.

The brief period of lj-fame was funny, but the saga could only go on for so long. ;)

I tend to add back anyone who adds. I kind of like to scan the journals of people I don't know so well, it can be entertaining if not educational. I came home today to several comments to the ORLY thing, so I guess a few people saw it for the first time!
