In the seven hours since his arrival in this strange place, Cid had wandered throughout the city searching for some clue hinting at his location, or perhaps he was simply yearning for a familiar face. The luck of the devil seemed to have taken a vacation, for now, as the best the wizened pilot could do was go to the local bar.

Although the pub was altogether too lifeless for Cid's tastes, the booze was strong enough, and he could crowd watch with impunity. The chair he'd been using as a footstool squeaked slightly under his weight as he shifted, eyes scanning the inhabitants of his current home. Despite the lighting that was anything but atmospheric, he'd chosen a corner table to sit and enjoy a nice stiff scotch. Or at least, what passed as scotch, in this place.

He realized dimly that there might be a market for real liquor, as he'd tasted better from his own bathtub brewery. The prospect of staying so firmly on the ground, however, galled Cid more than he cared to admit. The sky called its siren song to the man, making ( ... )

Blue eyes quickly inspected each person in the room. Two gruff men spoke in the center of the bar, bantering loudly and obviously drunk. Off to the side, a small woman and an older man were playing cards. Not a very exciting place, although, there was one more human left ( ... )

Cid lifted the glass of alcohol to his lips and took a swallow. The liquid washed down his palate like liquid smoke, burning a brimstone path in its wake and settling in his stomach like something warm and real and alive. He smiled at the sensation, and watched the woman approach ( ... )

Several long seconds passed and the man had not approached. Yazoo glanced out of the corner of his eye, finding his prey's back and staring intently as if he could will the other to come over. More agonizingly slow seconds passed with no such luck. A quiet sigh escaped his lips as he lowered his gaze to the floor ( ... )
